EP official: Serbian government "committed to EU future"

"The Serbian government is seriously committed to that. They are very serious when it comes to the European future of Serbia. That is very important," he said.

"We want to lend help to Serbia. We are very interested in making Serbia's EU pathway successful and I am certain that this will be the result of this visit, he underlined.

The Slovak MEP noted that the EP recently adopted a resolution on Serbia calling for negotiating chapters to be opened as soon as possible.

"The EP supports the opening of chapters, but the European Council decides on that," he said, and added that "much will depend on how Serbia will continue reforms and accession negotiations."

Kukan on Thursday met with Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic, and will also speak with First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivica Dacic and Parliament Speaker Maja Gojkovic and visit Novi Sad.

"I have arrived with the most numerous EP delegation that has ever visited Serbia, and the topic of our talks with Serbian officials will be the implementation of the Stabilization and Association Agreement and all relevant issues relating to Serbia's EU accession negotiations," Kukan said.
