Top officials of the Democratic Party (DS) met on Monday, a day after leader Boris Tadic suffered defeat in his bid to be reelected as Serbia's president. The meeting was called to "analyze election results". Democrats want Tadic to be next prime minister The DS Presidency members, B92 learned unofficially, agreed to ask Tadic to instead accept to be prime minister in a new government that is expected to be formed. This comes despite Tadic's announcement made in the election night on Sunday, when he congratulated Tomislav Nikolic on his victory in the presidential runoff, and noted he would not be the prime minister. According to unofficial information from the DS meeting, in case Tadic refused their request, top partyofficials suggested Dragan Djilas to take that position. Djilas was reelected Belgrade mayor on May 6 and has said during the campaign that he was not interested in becoming Serbia's next prime minister. Besides, it is unclear how the Democrats' potential coalition partners the Socialists (SPS) would react to such an arrangement. The party issued a brief official statement after the meeting last night, saying that it would start negotiations on Tuesday on forming a parliamentary majority necessary to vote in the next government. The DS will hold these talks with the SPS-JS-PUPS coalition, it was said. Unofficially, some members of the DS presidency suggested that the party should now relinquish its attempts to form a government and go join the opposition, but this was rejected with the explanation that it would "send Serbia ten years back".
