Kosovo was high on the agenda when George Bush and Jose Socrates met on Monday at White House. Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates, whose country currently holds the six-month presidency of the European Union, told the U.S. president that he was trying to “forge a unified European position on the future of Kosovo across the Atlantic, and within Europe.” U.S. president, Portuguese PM talk Kosovo Speaking to reporters after the meting, he said "Americans and Europeans agree on the need to find a solution to the Kosovo dilemma." "Our discussions about Kosovo show that the cooperation between Europe and the United States is very important for safety and for stability in the world," he said. Internationally brokered talks over the status of Kosovo have been deadlocked because of Kosovo's demand for independence and Serbia's refusal to accept it. The Portuguese prime minister hinted at the difficulty of reaching a European consensus on the issue, but made clear he was determined to succeed. "I guaranteed to the president [Bush] that the first priority I have in my mind regarding Kosovo is to keep Europe united.
