Flags at half mast in Republic of Srpska

The RS government has declared three days of national mourning after President Milan Jelic, 51, died on Sunday. Flags in all Republic of Srpska institutions will be at half mast from October 1 to 3, and all sports and cultural activities in the region have been cancelled. Flags at half mast in Republic of Srpska Jelic died around 6 p.m. on Sunday in Modrica of a heart attack, RS Prime Minister Milorad Dodik officially confirmed last night. He added that Jelic had shown no signs of life when he was taken to hospital in Doboj, as doctors’ attempts to resuscitate him proved futile. "This is a sad day for the Republic of Srpska," said Dodik. The RS president suffered a heart attack while watching a football match in his hometown, Modrica, his brother Slavko Jelic told the media, adding that Jelic had undergone bypass surgery in 2003. Jelic, a member of Dodik's Alliance of Independent Social-Democrats (SNSD), was elected president of the RS on October 1, 2006. Born in 1956 in northern Bosnia, he earned a doctorate in economics and was the head of the Modrica oil refinery for 13 years. Serbian President Boris Tadic and Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica expressed their deepest condolences to Jelic’s family and to the citizens of the Republic of Srpska. The Republic of Srpska lost its president, and Serbia lost its friend," Kostunica said in a statement."We worked together and made big plans to the benefit of Serbia and RS. Flags at half mast in Republic of Srpska

Jelić died around 6 p.m. on Sunday in Modriča of a heart attack, RS Prime Minister Milorad Dodik officially confirmed last night. He added that Jelić had shown no signs of life when he was taken to hospital in Doboj, as doctors’ attempts to resuscitate him proved futile.

"This is a sad day for the Republic of Srpska," said Dodik.
