Residents of the suburb of Brdo in northern Kosovska Mitrovica will protest today in an attempt to stop a Kosovo Albanian from rebuilding his home there. The KFOR commander in northern Kosovo, Michel Yakovleff, said that international military forces in the region would ensure the security of all citizens and would not tolerate violence from either side. Tensions in Kosovo over house construction Yakovleff said that the situation had calmed in Brdo after several days of high tension between local Serbs and Albanians. Albanian Ali Kadriu plans to rebuild two of his homes located in Brdo, but Serbs oppose the move. Municipal president in southern Kosovska Mitrovica, Bajram Rexhepi, said that it was the right of any home owner to return to their property. “It is unacceptable for someone else to decide on his rights, especially if his neighbors are about a kilometer and a half away. It’s ridiculous for them to be allowed to have a say on whether he can come back and do the work or not. UNMIK must implement standards for all ethnic communities,” he stressed. Rexhepi quoted the example of a village in Kosovo where a high-rise building was being built without planning permission just three meters from the property of Kosovo Albanians, whom no-one had asked if they minded or not. “Therefore, we want the same standards for everyone,” Rexhepi said. Rexhepi’s counterpart in northern Kosovska Mitrovica, Nenad Toplicevic, said that Serbs in the town did not want any problems with the Kosovo Albanians, but that there had still been no answer from the group of 350 Serbs who had asked to be allowed to return to their homes in the southern part of town, inhabited exclusively by ethnic Albanians.
