President Boris Tadic called on UNMIK and KFOR to refrain from using force against Serbs in K.Mitrovica. “This kind of harsh reaction, with the excessive use of force by UNMIK police and KFOR, who are otherwise responsible for the security of all Kosovo’s citizens, particularly today on March 17, a day when the Serb people experienced one of its worst pogroms, could lead to an escalation of violence in the region,” said the president. Speaking from Kosovska Mitrovica itself, Kosovo Serb leader Oliver Ivanovic has told B92 that “citizens are already on the streets and it’s absolutely certain there will be big protests today in northern Mitrovica.” Ivanovic said that “there has been no gunfire in north Mitrovica this morning,” but “the situation is very tense.” “From my balcony, I can see a long line of carabinieri in the southern part of Mitrovica, and the reality is that they could intervene, if the situation doesn’t calm down,” he warned. “This an UNMIK special unit for dealing with such situations, and I think there could be clashes between them and the Serbs. This is a fairly dangerous situation at a time when the Serbs are constantly thinking about whether they should stay in their homes till June, and they certainly don’t need these kinds of clashes,” added the Kosovo Serb representative. Ivanovic said that “serious negotiations are necessary” and called on Samardzic to “assume responsibility for these protests and for everything that the Serbs are trying to achieve.” “Ordinary people cannot do this, only a politician who is authorized for that sort of thing, and as Kosovo minister, he must do this. If he doesn’t want to, and if he is not accepted as a negotiator, then someone on the field must be given authorization, and that someone has to have direct links with him and his backing,” he stressed.
