The UN Security Council will consider the UNMIK report on Kosovo on January 16, says Libyan ambassador Giadalla Ettalhi.
At a press conference broadcast on the UN website, Ettalhi said he expected an agreement on the structure of that session next week.
The ambassador noted that it had already been agreed that it would be a Security Council consultation, but that the structure of the meeting would be reassessed, as the UN had today received President Boris Tadić’s request to speak at the session.
In a report on the situation in Kosovo in the last three months, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that the status quo was virtually untenable, and that that was why “the Security Council and the international community’s main priority should be to continue the process of determining Kosovo’s status.”
UNMIK Chief Joachim Ruecker will present the report to the Security Council.
Also on Thursday at the UN, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's spokeswoman Michele Montas said he still believes that an agreement between Belgrade and Priština, approved by the UN Security Council, would constitute the best solution for the future status of the province.
"Ban still believes that a compromise reached through negotiations between the two parties would be the best solution," she said, according to Tanjug news agency.
She was also quoted as saying that the UN chief supports resumption of negotiations.
"Ban also believes that resolving the Kosovo status outside the UN framework would have serious consequences for the world order," Montas said. |
