73 cluster bombs have been removed from an area of three million square meters, officials say. “Cluster bombs NATO air forces dropped on Serbia in 1999 were strewn over 23 million square meters of land, and EUR 20mn are needed for their removal,” Petar Mihajlovic, the director of the Government’s Mine Clearing Center told B92 on Tuesday. 23 million sq meters of land affected with bombs He added that cluster bombs are mostly concentrated in several points in the area of Nis, Kopaonik, Kursumlija, Sjenica, Kraljevo and the village of Vladimirci near Sabac. “The area around Nis airport has been fully demined, along with the land around the city hospital, the Duvaniste settlement, the industrial zone, and the Philip Morris tobacco plant. As for Kopaonik mountain, we’ve removed cluster bombs from the sports center pitch and the Baciste hotel,” explained Mihajlovic, adding that these areas were now safe. He said that the removal of cluster bombs in Serbia had been in line with international standards for humanitarian mine clearance, that are completely different to military ones. Mihajlovic explained that the Center was not in charge of decontamination and removal of depleted uranium projectiles, and that the Environment Ministry and the Vinca Institute had removed contaminated soil and projectiles at four locations in Bujanovac, Medvedja and Presevo municipalities. According to him, NATO had also received a request to submit a list of locations potentially holding heavy unexploded bombs buried more than five meters under ground. It is presumed that there are more than sixty bombs at forty locations. Mihajlovic also said that the project for the extraction of a bomb located in the Belgrade suburb of Zvezdara buried five meters under ground has been completed, and that EUR 250,000 will be needed for its implementation.
