Sergei Lavrov says claims that Kosovo independence is inevitable are stopping Pristina from making concessions. "Many people would like to see Belgrade and Pristina reach agreement, but some say that if that doesn’t happen we should face up to reality, which is the unilateral declaration of Kosovo independence. I think that’s wrong," the Russian Foreign Minister told journalists during the 62nd session of the UN General Assembly. Independence calls impede process, says Lavrov Lavrov said that the Kosovo problem could be solved only on the basis of international law, via a Security Council resolution that could only be adopted once both sides had come to an agreement. "Everyone who cares about stability in the Balkans, respect for international law and preventing dangerous and harmful precedents are doing everything in their power to help the sides to find a mutually acceptable solution in a direct manner."
