Economy Minister Mladjan Dinkic on Monday opened a new distillery in Kosjeric, a town in western Serbia. The plant has been touted as "the most modern brandy factory in this part of Europe". Economy minister in brandy factory opening The Economy and Regional Development Ministry said in a statement issued in Belgrade that "1,500 families from the area" would make a living thanks to the distillery. Dinkic also pledged the government's support for entrepreneurial efforts, such as that of the distillery owner Vujica Zaric, who, it was said, built the plant "with his own funds". The total value of the investment was EUR 3mn,and the factory will process various fruit to produce three million liters of brandy a year, 60 percent of which will be exported to Germany, Austria, Slovenia and Australia, said reports. “It’s important that Serbia has finished products too, not only raw materials. It’s often said that rakija (brandy) is our brand, for which Serbia is recognized, but we were unable to make a good design and quality which the people outside of Serbia would accept,” Dinkic said and added that the Zaric distillery had succeeded in this. But, as the brandy maker will use Italian-made equipment, the minister expressed hope that the domestic metal industry would soon start manufacturing items necessary for this kind of production. He also promised that the government would help provide "permanent working capital for the purchase of fruit". The new distillery will hire 45 workers, while "1,500 households from the area of Kosjeric will indirectly work for the factory by producing fruit", said Dinkic's ministry. The distillery will make plum brandy, including the juniper flavored kind, but will also make less common raspberry variety, it was announced.
