Catalonia: "Informal vote" instead of referendum

During Monday's meeting of leaders of four Catalan parties and Mas it was decided that the referendum will be postponed after the authorities in Madrid declared it unconstitutional.

Spain's Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said this was "great news," and that Madrid should have discussions with the Catalans and turn to the future.

The Constitutional Court of Spain on September 29 issued temporary ban on he referendum on independence of Catalonia which will be valid until a verdict is passed.

Polls show that a majority of Catalans support the referendum, but are divided on the question of independence. The idea receives less support when respondents are asked whether they want an independent Catalonia outside the EU.

Catalonia, where Barcelona is the largest city, is one of the richest and economically most developed Spanish regions, but also among the most indebted.
