The North Caucasus Federal District remains unstable in terms of security and the situation in the region continues to be complicated, Dmitry Medvedev says. "The situation in the district is rather complicated. We need to admit that it has barely improved," the Russian president said at a meeting on measures to ensure stability in the volatile region. "North Caucasus remains unstable" The president said, however, that there are certain improvements. "Many useful events have been held. Over 60 terrorism-related crimes have been prevented, which means lives were saved, and no one should forget this," he said. Russia's National Anti-Terrorism Committee (NAK) said in October more than 300 militants had been killed in the troubled North Caucasus since the beginning of the year. The Kremlin has vowed to clamp down on militant groups while stepping up efforts to boost the local economy. Moscow announced an end to its decade-long antiterrorism campaign against separatists in Chechnya in April 2009, but has since had to step up the fight against militants as skirmishes and attacks on police and other officials have continued.
