Ombudsman critical of anti-corruption results, media

"The strong political momentum given from the political level has not opened the doors fully to the relevant state bodies which would fight against corruption, besides the personality stamp which it received, it also gave it a character of institutional quality, comprehensiveness, massiveness and long-term standing," states the Ombudsman Report 2013.

Janković underscored that the second round of reform of the judiciary did not lead to noticeable improvements, and the independence and autonomy of the judiciary is still faltering under pressure.

The High Judicial Council, an independent body with constitutional jurisdiction to secure and guarantee the independence of courts and judges, was reserved in public in the majority of worrying cases, wrote Jankovic in his report.

As regards the media, the Ombudsman said that the right of citizens to be informed about issues of public importance truthfully and fully is being seriously violated in Serbia.

"In the race for circulation and ratings, but under the direct influence or pressure from various centers of power, citizens are given selective, incomplete, half-truths and complete lies, factually inaccurate (mis)information in addition to truthful information", said the Ombudsman in his 2013 report.

Janković underscored that two mutually pervasive phenomena are causing special concern: pressure on the media (control of the media) and the leaking of classified information and the relocation of institutional processes to privileged, tabloid media (tabloidization of the state).
