Around 14,000 children live below the poverty line in Serbia. Children under the age of 13 and disabled children are in the worst position.

Around 14,000 children live below the poverty line in Serbia. Children under the age of 13 and disabled children are in the worst position. “According to the latest statistical data, around 14,000 children live below the absolute poverty line in Serbia. Every eighth child lived below the poverty line in 2010,” said Labor and Social Policy Assistant Minister Suzana Paunovic on the occasion of the Universal Children’s Day. 14,000 Serbian children live in poverty She stressed that, according to the ministry’s data, children under the age of 13 are threatened the most since every seventh child from that group lives below the poverty line. Paunovic stressed that disabled children were also in a bad position and added that it was necessary to additionally and intensively work with the group. She pointed out that the ministry had directed majority of its activities this year to inclusion of disabled children in society. The assistant minister stated that the Law on Social Protection had significantly improved position of poor families with children, but warned that 60,000 children received welfare. Equality Protection Assistant Commissioner Kosana Beker and Deputy Ombudsman for Children’s Rights Tamara Luksic Orlandic also agree that Serbia has made progress regarding protection of children’s rights. Beker said that adoption of good laws represented “tools that can be used in order to make progress in protection of children’s rights”.
