Representatives of 100 refugee associations of Serbs from Croatia delivered a petition with 45,000 signatures to the EU representative in Belgrade.

Representatives of 100 refugee associations of Serbs from Croatia delivered a petition with 45,000 signatures to the EU representative in Belgrade. They called for a just and durable solution to their problems with housing, property and other rights denied them by the Croatian authorities. Refugees deliver petition to EU rep They asked Vincent Degert to deliver the signatures collected in January, in a drive running through March 31, to top European officials and urge them to support their demands. The petition is addressed to European Council President Herman van Rompuy, European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, EU High Representative Catherine Ashton and EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele. Head of the coalition of refugee associations in Serbia Miodrag Linta noted that representatives of refugee associations also informed Degert about the draft resolution on the respect of human rights of Serb refugees and Serbian citizens whose property and other rights were infringed upon in Croatia during the 1990s. Linta said that the refugees want Degert to support their initiative for a meeting of EU countries to discuss opening talks about their problems. Linta explained that they first turned to the EU Delegation in Serbia, because 400,000 Serbs fled to Serbia from Croatia and most still live there, while their problems remain unsolved. He announced, however, that the petition and resolution will also be delivered to Head of EU Delegation in Croatia Paul Vandoren. The petition urges the EU to refrain from signing an accession agreement with Croatia until the country reaches European standards in property, housing and other rights of Serbs and other citizens.
