New donations to “Food for Everyone”

Agriculture Minister Sasa Dragin today signed several food donation agreements with 11 donors. This came as a part of B92 Fund project “Food for Everyone”, aimed at reducing hunger. New donations to “Food for Everyone” The overall value oftoday’s donations is about EUR 500,000. Dragin said after the signing ceremony at the government headquarters that socially responsible behavior was “normal in all developed countries” and that the state and society needed to be united in such campaigns. Labor and Social Policy Minister Rasim Ljajic pointed out on the occasion that there were 69 soup kitchens in Serbia with 36,000 users, and that 21 soup kitchens had been closed due to a lack of funding. He pointed out that RSD 252mn was being allocated for the work of soup kitchens and announced opening of ten new ones. Ljajic stressed that 21,000 lunch packages had been distributed to remote households in the first three months of the year. Director of the Serbian Red Cross Dragan Radovanovic stated at the signing that the meal they got at soup kitchens was “the only meal during the day for 70 percent of soup kitchen users”. “Food for Everyone” was launched in 2009 in order to help the most vulnerable groups of society by providing food for the soup kitchens. B92 CEO Veran Matic, who also attended the signing in Belgrade today, said that food worth EUR 1.2mn, and a further RSD 12mn (some EUR 123,000) via text messages, was raised last year. He added that setting up “social companies”, which would hire those taking the brunt of poverty, would be one way to help them. Matic emphasized that the Victoria Group company, which was one of the signatories today with a food donation worth RSD 30mn, had in 2009 participated with donations worth EUR 600,000. Matic especially pointed out to good cooperation between the “Food for Everyone” initiative and Bojan Pajtic, the Vojvodina Executive Council, the Commodity Reserves Directorate and private donors, which enabled stable supplies to soup kitchens Vojvodina for the long term. The donation agreements were signed in Belgrade this Wednesday by Sunoko sugar refinery from Novi Sad, Crvenka sugar factory, Sajkaska sugar factory from Zabalj, TE-TO sugar factory from Senta, Sabac Dairy, Bambi-Banat, Veropoulos from Belgrade, Granexport Pancevo, Mitsides Point Sremska Mitrovica and Zdravo Organic fruit and vegetable processing company from Selenca.
