Father of victim testfies in Haradinaj trial

On July 10, 1998, Catholic Albanian Pal Krasniqi went to the Jablanica HQ, intending to join the KLA.

Once he got there, he was arrested, accused of being a Serbian spy and tortured until he signed a false confession. He was last seen on July 16, 1998, in the KLA prison in Jablanica.

Those allegations are presented in the Hague indictment against Ramush Haradinaj, Idriz Balaj and Lahi Brahimaj. The prosecution also alleges that Brahimaj, the third accused, was in charge of the prison.

Krasniqi testified about his son’s departure for Jablanica and efforts to learn about his fate. On July 5, Pal and his friend Mahir Demaj left Peć to go to Jablanica, Krasniqi recounted, but were stopped at the checkpoint in Velika Kruša by the Serbian police.

They were taken to Klina, severely beaten, and released. Five days later, they went to Jablanica and the witness has not heard virtually anything about his son since then, although he made enquiries about the events that followed.

In the summer of 1999, after the war ended, the witness went to Jablanica and was told that Pal Krasniqi’s name was not on the list of soldiers who had been through the KLA base.

He then went to see a KLA commander from Jablanica, Alush Agushi, who promised he’d ask around about his son and let him know what he’d found out in two weeks’ time. He never got back to Ded Krasniqi.

Even Mahir Demaj, the man who had gone to Jablanica with his son, told the witness not to look for him any more.

Krasniqi believes that Demaj did not dare share with him the knowledge he had because he was afraid of reprisals by former KLA members, now high-ranking political and police officials in Kosovo.

Pal Krasniqi’s body has never been found. He is still considered missing.
