The house was built as a joint project between a number of companies and individuals in support of the Advisory Bureau and a B92 campaign. The building was officially opened by President Boris Tadic. The safe house is designed for female and child victims of domestic violence and is the first of its kind in Belgrade. It has been constructed according to a model proposed by the Council of Europe. The keys to the building were handed over by Veran Matic on B92’s behalf. Tadic said that, regardless of the problems the country was faced with, one must never forget the problems of the ordinary citizen, and the most serious were those within the family. President of the B92 campaign Ruzica Djindjic believed that people would willingly assist in supporting the house financially. Vesna Stanojevic, Advisory Bureau coordinator, told B92 that the shelter was a place where the victims of violence could carry on with their lives. “It’s not just a place to sleep, but for education and play with children where the victims’ needs are taken care of, if,for example, they need someone to talk to,“ she said. In terms of security, she said that, since the opening of the first safe house in 2000, they had had to move 11 times as the security situation had always been doubtful. Nevertheless, she stated that the security level at the new shelter was far superior to any previous locations, and would further improve with time. A second safe house, right next door, will be ready by the end of the year. There are also plans to construct similar shelters in Vojvodina and in the south of the country.
