The Montenegrin MUP acted after it received a certificate according to which Jokic became a citizen of Serbia "after June 3, 2006," said the daily Dnevne Novine.

The case has now been sent back to Kotor's competent authorities, who should take a statement from Jokic.

In the beginning of July, Jokic announced that he was a citizen of Montenegro and that he did hold the citizenship of any other country, Tanjug reported on Monday.

He in this way reacted to media reports claiming that, at the time of his election as the head of the Kotor municipality, Jokic had two citizenships - Montenegrin and Serbian.

Montenegro does not allow dual citizenship, while Serbia does.

The question of dual citizenship is one of the open issues between the two countries. Talks had been launched on this topic, but were terminated without any concrete agreement.
