Slovenians vote against same sex marriage

The referendum needed 342,000 "no" votes to succeed in rejecting the law.

The turnout on Sunday was law - 35.89 percent.

As a consequence of the referendum, Slovenia's parliament and government will not be able to consider a similar legal solution for another year.

The country's parliament in March passed a law changing the definition of marriage from "a union of a man and a woman" to "a union of two persons," granting homosexual couples the same rights as heterosexuals, including the right to adopt children.

But opponents immediately started a campaign, and gathered 40,000 signatures for their initiative to hold a referendum on this issue.

A few days ago the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis, speaking with a group of Slovenian pilgrims and without explicitly mentioning the referendum, called on Slovenian politicians to "stand in defense of family values."

President Borut Pahor and Prime Minister Miro Cerar and his party supported the law.
