A commemoration for the victims of the Second World War Ustasha Jadovno concentration camp was held at Mt. Velebit near Gospic, in Croatia. Croatian President Ivo Josipovic attended the ceremony, to say that the history was "still not valued enough in Croatia" and that there were too many who were make the importance of the "anti-fascist struggle relative". Commemoration for Serb WW2 victims The Ustashas were the forces of the so-called Independent State of Croatia (NDH)- a WW2 puppet Nazi creation that conducted mass murder of Serbs, Jews and Roma in several death camps, Jasenovac being the largest of them. The commemoration at Jadovno on Sunday was also attended by the President of the Serb National Council in Croatia Milorad Pupavac and Serbian president's advisor Mladjan Djordjevic. Josipovic stated that the memory of fascism had not faded. “Although many anti-fascist monuments have been destroyed, our memory about what these monuments represented was not. This speaks of our firm anti-fascist orientation. That’s why we will renovate and preserve our monuments, both for us and those who come after us,” the Croatian president stated. Pupovac, who is also MP in the Croatian assembly, condemned a policy of "equalizing crimes", adding that the Ustashe crimes represented a policy of the state genocide, which resulted in "retaliation and revenge policies" later. “This place is one of the most horrific crime scenes which happened during the NDH, and we’re grateful to President Josipovic for saving this place from oblivion and trying to renew sites like this so they would be places worthy of remembrance and memory,” Pupavac stressed. A religious service for the victims was held by Serbian Orthodox Bishop of Gornji Karlovac Gerasim, and Rabbi of Zagreb Luciano Mose Prelevic. During less than four months of its existence in 1941, about 40,000 people were murdered in the Jadovno concentration camp.
