The European Union Council of Ministers will accept Montenegro’s application for EU membership in April, says Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek. At a joint press conference with Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic, Topolanek, whose country is currently presiding over the EU, also announced continued liberalization of the visa regime with Montenegro, with a possible spot on the white Schengen list by the end of the year. Montenegro heading for Schengen white list “All the countries of the Western Balkans have the goal of EU membership, but every one of them has their own tempo, advantages and priorities on this road. Montenegro is achieving its dream successfully and relatively quickly,” Topolanek said. He said that the latest report on the Stabilization and Association Agreement had been positive and that the application for candidate status would be accepted. “I hope that the evaluation process will begin as soon as possible, as well as the process of beginning membership negotiations with Montenegro,” said the Czech prime minister. The European Commission is expected to give its report on the completion of Schengen list conditions by countries in the region in May. Djukanovic said that all of the countries believed that further visa liberalization was the most important issue. “I told our guest of our expectations that the most important issue this year for our citizens was the further liberalization of the visa regime and creating the conditions for our country to enter the Schengen white list this year, or even—and we hope that it is not unrealistically optimistic—during the Czech presidency,” he said.
