Without Storm there would not be Croatia’s foreign policy successes today, PM Ivo Sanader said. The Croatian premier, speaking at the central event to celebrate the anniversary of Operation Storm, added that the military campaign was important for Croatia's road towards the EU and NATO. Sanader added that in this operation, and the war in general, everyone who participated on the Croatian side and under its flag felt the importance of the moment in which "no one was looking at who was who and who was someone's grandfather or uncle". Croatian parliament speaker Luka Bebic said that the Croatian army does not have to apologize to anyone, because with Operation Storm the army was reestablishing its own constitution and legal order to its territory. “Croatia will apologize for what it did on Serbian territory, but we did not go to Serbia, we defended Croatia,” Bebic said, adding that the victory of this campaign under the leadership of Franjo Tudjman made Croatia proud. Army Chief-of-Staff Josip Lucic said that Croatia showed the whole world with Operation Storm how to defend one’s homeland. Family, Veterans and Inter-Generational Solidarity Minister Jadranka Kosor said that every crime committed during the war should be punished, but that the motive of the Croatian defenders was clear, because they wanted to defend their homes and motherland. The ceremony at the Knin cemetery was attended by a large number of Croatian ministers and MPs with a parade of 1,500 veterans. More than 200,000 police officers and soldiers, along with from Croat and Muslim units from Bosnia-Herzegovina, participated in the operation in 1995. Knin fell one day after the offensive was launched on August 4, and the entire operation was finished in less than four days. During Operation Storm, more than 200,000 ethnic Serbs were forced to flee Croatia, while as many as 2,000 were murdered or went missing.
