Bulgarian media say this country "insists" that the future U.S. anti-missile shield in Europe covers its territory. The reports quote statements made by Bulgarian vice-premier Ivaylo Kalfin in the wake of the NATO summit in Bucharest, Romania. "Bulgaria wants U.S. anti-missile shield" "Our country is satisfied with other Alliance members' willingness to explore the opportunities of connecting of the planned facilities in the Czech Republic and Poland with other systems for anti-missile defense," Kalfin said, according to Bulgaria's News.bg portal. The minister was also cited as saying that the purpose of the missile defense plans, vehemently opposed by Russia, would be to protect from the "threats that could come from the Asian continent". Sofia is also happy with NATO's invitation to Croatia and Albania to join its ranks, which Kalfin described as being "in line with the priorities of Bulgaria's foreign policy". "Unfortunately, to be completely satisfied with what happened at this meeting, Macedonia should also have received an invitation for NATO membership," Kalfin said.
