Montenegro to sign SAA on Monday

Having settled the linguistic dispute with Bulgaria, Montenegro will on Monday sign the SAA. On Thursday Bulgaria said it would block the signing of the Stabilization and Association Agreement between Podgorica and Brussels due on Monday, refusing to accept that the Bulgarian translation of Montenegro's agreement, featured the name of the European currency written as "euro" (еуро) instead of "evro" (евро), a Cyrillic alphabet transliteration. Montenegro to sign SAA on Monday The Portuguese EU officials were quick to react, calling an urgent meeting with Bulgarian representative Betina Joteva. She said following the talks that the issue was settled and that Montenegro could proceed to sign the agreement bringing it closer to EU membership. Beta learned from its diplomatic sources with the Union that Portuguese officials managed to bridge the gap with Bulgaria by offering to draft a resolution that will acknowledge the linguistic-technical problem in the spelling of the European currency in Cyrillic alphabet. They assured Sofia that the problem will be solved as soon as possible. On Thursday, EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn voiced concern over the possible blocking of the SAA with Montenegro. "It is regrettable that Bulgaria is prepared to take Montenegro hostage over an unrelated technical issue, whatever its domestic importance," he said. A decade ago, the EU picked euro as the name for the single currency using the Latin and Greek alphabets. But Bulgaria managed to get its own Cyrillic spelling and pronunciation into its EU membership treaty without Frankfurt's European Central Bank noticing the difference. Now the European Central Bank's lawyers are insisting on the official spelling to be enshrined in the new EU treaty.

The Portuguese EU officials were quick to react, calling an urgent meeting with Bulgarian representative Betina Joteva. She said following the talks that the issue was settled and that Montenegro could proceed to sign the agreement bringing it closer to EU membership.

They assured Sofia that the problem will be solved as soon as possible.
