Serbia as "major bridge" on New Silk Road

Even though it is a much broader initiative that does not only involve Sino-Serbian cooperation but many other countries as well, Serbia has the role of a key bridge connecting China with Europe, said Huang, who took part in an international conference on Danube as part of the New Silk Road.

Infrastructure, road construction, energy, finance, education and science are among the most important areas where the two countries could enhance their cooperation in the future, Huang said.

China aims to revive the ancient Silk Road as a modern transport, trade and economic corridor from Shanghai to Berlin.

Passing through China, Mongolia, Russia, Belarus, Poland and Germany, the 13,000 km route would create an economic zone, and implies construction of high speed railways, roads, motorways, energy transmission and distribution networks and optical cable networks.

The project is estimated to be worth about USD 1,000 billion.

The projects Serbia will implement with China are worth nearly USD 3 billion in total, said Dejan Trifunovic, state secretary at Serbia's Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure.

They include a new, EUR 280 million port on the Danube River near the Pupin Bridge in Belgrade, he said.
