"UNHCR continues to assist Serbian government"

Speaking for the state broadcaster RTS, Schodder said that a fourth of the money would go to Serbia to help it build temporary housing facilities for the refugees.

He added that refugees will during the winter stay in Serbia "a little longer" because their departure to the EU countries "will depend on the weather."

"We should be aware there is also the possibility of a situation emerging when borders are closed. We wish to help Serbia so that no refugee is endangered," said Schodder, according to Tanjug.

Schodder remarked that the capacity to accommodate 3,000 people was not enough and that greater capacities should be provided.

He said UNHCR is talking with the government with the goal of preparing state-owned facilities to accommodate refugees.

"Most of these accommodation facilities would be temporary," said Schodder.

The EU has estimated that three more million refugees could arrive to its member-states by the end of next year, although the capacity to receive them is "already under great strain," Tanjug said.

Serbia informed the European Union earlier that it would build temporary housing facilities for 3,000 more refugees, which means to double the capacity it has the commitment to provide.
