Daily: Provincial and local elections to be held on Jan. 24

It writes that while it suits the SNS to hold elections as soon as possible, "as the opening of negotiating chapters with the EU by the end of the year, and increase of salaries and pensions, as well as the results achieved in foreign police will go to their favor beside the high ratings."

On the other hand, said the article, the opposition wants elections to be held later "in order to organize and raise money for the campaign."

A compromise solution regarding the date of elections was suggested by SVM party leader Istvan Pasztor, reported the paper, and quoted a source as saying:

"Pasztor is in favor of elections, but he needs an alibi to enter the election story. With this date he will side neither with the DS, who want May elections, nor with the SNS, who want them in December."
