FM: Important to be represented at New Suez Canal ceremony

According to a Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement quoted by the Beta agency, he said the opening of a new section of the canal is an event of great importance for the region and the world which will bring together a large number of foreign delegations.

"It is important that Serbia is present here today. We have focused our attention on renewing the traditional friendly relations that we had with the countries of this region. I hope we will have plenty of time for bilateral talks on important topics with the most important politicians who will come to this event," said Dacic.

The Serbian minister added that the French president as well as Russian and Greek prime ministers are expected to attend, "and 20 more presidents, prime ministers, kings, as well as a large number of foreign ministers."

"Today is an opportunity to talk with presidents and prime ministers who will come here," said he.

Dacic added that he on Wednesday met with Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shukry, who is expected to visit Serbia by the end of the year.

"It was an important meeting, we want to renew our relations that were marred in the period when the previous regime in Egypt made the decision to recognize the unilaterally proclaimed independence of Kosovo and Metohija. We are making an effort to relativize that decision as much as possible, to build good bilateral relations with Egypt," Dacic said.

He recalled the good economic and military cooperation with Egypt during the regime of Josip Broz Tito in the former Yugoslavia, and "expressed confidence that it will be the same in the future."

Dacic will this evening attend the opening ceremony of the new Suez Canal. The first ship that will pass through it will be the 150 yearss old presidential yacht El-Mahrousa. Egyptian President Abdel Fatah El Sisi and his guests from all over the world are expected to be on the yacht.

The project to build the major extension to the canal was worth USD 8.5 billion. It was launched in August 1014 and completed in less than a year, on July 23.
