President Boris Tadic will host the 9th UNESCO Regional Summit to be held on September 2 at the Viminacium archaeological site in Serbia. Participation has been confirmed by several heads of state of southeastern European countries and by UNESCO's Director-General Irina Bokova, Tadic's press service told Tanjug on Friday. Regional leaders to gather for UNESCO summit The summit, entitled Modern Art, Reconciliation in Southeast Europe, will be attended by the presidents of Bulgaria, Albania, Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Macedonia. Moldova will be represented by its deputy minister of culture, and a response is expected from Greece. The presence is also expected of of regional culture ministers and authors who deal with the summit theme - modern art and its role in reconciliation, in a region that has gone through a difficult and turbulent period. Serbia has a number of natural and cultural assets on the list of monuments under the protection of UNESCO. However, experts who work with the UN agency believe that cooperation needs to be better and note that some problematic issues remain, such as the attempts by provisional Kosovo government to appropriate some of the Serbian cultural heritage in the province. UNESCO is a specialized agency of the United Nations, founded with the aim of building peace, creating a dialogue between civilizations, cultures and peoples and promoting international collaboration through education, science and culture.
