Democratic Party (DS) official Dragoljub Micunovic said that smaller parties in the government must stop “blackmailing” the rest of the ruling coalition. He said that regardless of whether the Public Information Law will be adopted, the government will not be toppled. DS to small parties: Stop blackmailing “A story of propaganda has been made from this in order for elections to occur, more to dramatize the situation than to show that it is objectively problematic,” Micunovic told daily Blic. He said that the Information Law is an example of how very important issues, such as organizing free press, can create a politicized issue, and abandon all possibilities of talking about the problem. Micunovic said that “if the coalition falls apart as many are saying it will, then these small partners who are pulling the strings would have to ask themselves whether that is suicide for them, and they should know that there are others ways to mend holes that are left by their departure.” He said that voting on the law, which is scheduled for August 31, was postponed in order to find the best way to solve this issue. “My stance is that there is no free media in the legal sense, nor quality without responsibility. If someone says that this will introduce auto-censorship, we must ask why that is so bad. If someone has auto-censorship which reflects their moral responsibilities, then they will not be frightened by any fines,” Micunovic said. However, he did say that the fines are too stringent and large and that he does not agree with them. “But why would the existence of these fines scare someone? Whether the bill will pass on August 31, will depend on whether we will pass added law, such as the Law for Media Concentration, which will decrease the eventual consequences of this law. I think that with this postponement, we have time to make a good set of European laws,” Micunovic concluded.
