French Ambassador to Belgrade Jean Francois Terral expects Serbia to become an EU member-state in five to six years’ time. "Serbia is the most significant country in the region because of its geographic position and its economic potential, but it needs to conduct certain administrative reforms” Terral told a trade seminar organized by the Meridian Group and the Serbia Investment and Export Promotion Agency (SIEPA). "Serbia EU member in 5, 6 years" Serbian exporters are having difficulties because of the lack of coordination between Serbian and EU regulations, said Deputy Finance Minister Igor Brkovic. Brkovic pointed out that 60 percent of Serbia’s trade was conducted with the EU, adding that 30 percent of Serbian trade laws needed to be eliminated. He said that small and medium enterprises were Serbia's key economic sector, because they employed two thirds of the total working population, registered 56 percent of turnover, 40 percent of export and 60 percent of import. The EU has so far helped the development of small and medium enterprises with EUR 2.7bn, while the Economy Ministry has allocated around EUR250mn, EUR 75mn of which for export, Terral said. The seminar was organized to give Serbian companies a better idea of the most significant procedures and introduce them to the latest international business trends.
