President Boris Tadic says that the largest deposit of coal in this part of Europe is situated in Kosovo. He made the remarks Thursday while visiting the Kolubara coal mines, and added that is why the southern province is also a major economic issue, and not simply an issue of Serbia's identity, integrity and sovereignty. Tadic looks at Kosovo's economic value "While defending Kosovo, Serbia has also to take into account its economic interests in Kosovo," Tadic said in Kalenic, the seat of the Tamnava strip mine, south of Belgrade. "The most important concern is for our people in Kosovo and our cultural and historical monuments," he specified. The president reiterated that "Serbia must move toward Europe" with the appraisal that the presidential elections are "national, not party." Tadic stated that he was convinced that "the Serbia of the 21st century" will win on January 20, and not "the Serbia of the 1990s." After a meeting with miners at the Tamnava's Western Field, Tadic said that it is necessary to continue investing in the energy sector, in regards to the production of oil and electricity, as well as in the oil economy and production of gas. He stated that he was convinced that Serbia would once again become an exporter of electricity. "In the world, it is not possible to defend a national identity with a weak economy, and there is no economy without a developed energy sector," Tadic added. Asked to comment on the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) support for New Serbia's presidential candidate, Velimir Ilic, Tadic said that support for this or that candidate is "important, but not decisive" as in the elections "the citizens will choose, not political parties."
