President Boris Tadic was in Lisbon Wednesday for talks with Portuguese officials. Tadic and his Portuguese counterpart, Anibal Cavaco Silva, supported the strengthening of ties between Serbia and Portugal, which is presiding over the EU until the end of the year, Beta reported. Tadic: Gov't, president, have common Kosovo policy Silva said his country "attached great significance to Serbia's European integration," according to the agency. He added that it was necessary to strengthen bilateral ties with Serbia as "an important Balkan country, which has good economic results and high economic potential." Tadic described the meeting as "successful" and presented Serbia's position on all major matters. He added that the country's strategic goal was membership in the EU and stressed that Serbia would pursue that path. The president further said he expected cooperation with the Hague tribunal to continue, and that all indictees would be tried before the tribunal. Tadic stressed that Serbia does not accept independence for Kosovo and added that the Serbian government and president have a common policy on Kosovo. He added that Serbia is ready to compromise, but not on its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Earlier the same day, Tadic met with Portuguese Parliament Speaker Jaime Gama and Prime Minister Jose Socrates to discuss economic cooperation and potential Portuguese investments in Serbia's economy. While in Portugal, Tadic also addressed the issue of upcoming elections for the Kosovo assembly, saying he had no right to call on Kosovo Serbs to take part in the upcoming elections in the province. "A few years ago, I called on the Serbs to vote in the Kosovo elections, clearly on condition that all rights be fulfilled relating to decentralization, healthcare, police, judiciary, education, security." "Unfortunately, none of those conditions have been fulfilled and today, I have no right to call on the Kosovo Serbs to vote in the provincial elections," Tadic told reporters in Lisbon. Speaking about local elections in Kosovo, Tadic said "after a serious analysis of the situation, the Serbian president and the government will decide in the coming days on what they will recommend to the Kosovo Serbs."
