Bosnia: Outrage over government pay rise

"We call upon the government to annul this shameful decision and explain to the public and the citizens of this country what guided them to almost double their salaries, especially bearing in mind the difficult situation the majority of the population is in," the opposition Social Democratic party said.

The basic salary of an official is currently EUR 900. Benefits, not including this latest one, take that up to EUR 1,250. They will now receive EUR 2,000.

"We can barely survive on our salaries and yet the politicians here decide to increase their income which we, the tax payers, allocate money for. Shame on them. I work for three or four months for EUR 2,000," said Senad Ridžić, a 44 year-old economist.

About 40 percent of the Bosnian population is unemployed and those who do work struggle to make ends meet on an average salary of EUR 250 per month.

Bosnian media said the government’s decision to grant its officials the "positional benefit" was illegal and an attempt to bypass the regular procedure for increasing salaries.

Sarajevo's daily newspaper, Oslobođenje reported that government officials will have already received their "positional benefit" in their May pay package.
