The NBS governor says the government must make effort to contain this year's inflation within the projected level. Radovan Jelasic said Saturday that an inflation rate higher than 6.5 percent would spell increased costs for the entire economy, and an unpleasant surprise for all citizens. "Gov't must join in fight against inflation" "Each percent of inflation automatically decreases salaries," Jelasic explained. "I believe these really are sufficient reasons for the government to be even more restrictive until the end of this year, and to continue to be very restrictive in 2008, in order to bring the inflation to a level lower than what we have now," the central bank chief said. He also expressed his dissatisfaction with the way Serbian public enterprises were run. "We haven't exactly excelled at managing public companies here, nor have we proved them to be immune to political influence."
