Nikolic, Abbas open new Palestinian embassy building
After their meeting, also on Wednesday, Nikolic and Abbas stated there were " no open issues between Serbian and Palestine."Nikolic thanked Palestine for not recognizing the independence of Serbia's southern province of Kosovo, unilaterally proclaimed by ethnic Albanians in February 2008.
Abbas pointed out that Palestine appreciates Serbia's support in the UN and reciprocates support for Serbia.
In 1989, former SFR Yugoslavia recognized Palestine and established diplomatic relations with the country, and Serbia is the only country in the region which backed the resolution providing Palestine with the status of a UN observer non-member country in 2012.
Abbas visited Serbia in 2009, and Nikolic paid an official visit to Ramallah in 2013.
Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic said on Wednesday Serbia is "thinking of opening its embassy in Ramallah."
