Serbian citizens arrested for smuggling migrants

The Hungarian police have announced that they arrested three Serbian citizens on August 28 on charges of smuggling illegal migrants from Syria and Iraq.

A statement said that a border police patrol near Kelebija stopped three vehicles with Italian number plates driven by the suspects.

A passenger car led the convoy, followed by a van and a minibus, transporting 69 Syrians and 12 Iraqis who have been turned over to immigration authorities, said the Hungarian police.

The Serbian citizens have been arrested and charged with people trafficking.

It was also announced on Monday morning that the Hungarian police in the past 72 hours detained 8,792 persons for illegally crossings the border, and filed criminal complaints for trafficking against 36 persons.


Austria introduces tougher border controls

Austria has introduced controls of trucks at its eastern border after the recent tragedy in which 71 refugees lost their lives in a truck driven by traffickers.

Hungarian police use tear gas in migrant center
