"New government's program impressive"

The government program deals with the most pressing issues for the Serbian citizens, as well as with the economy and further EU-related reforms, Fule said.

"I have no doubts about the government's commitment to reforms and the EU is there to support them," he added.

He said that the Serbian government "should devote particular attention to the economy, the rule of law and good-neighborly relations," adding that, judging by their first statements, the new team seems to be on the right track.

"It would be good for Serbia if the government succeeded in everything it intends to do: implement economic reforms, changes in the way institutions work and a judicial reform, all of which is important for the Serbian citizens first and foremost, but also for foreign investors," the European commissioner said.

Fule said that he was paying a visit to Belgrade to congratulate the new government on its election and discuss additional support to Serbia in the EU accession talks, which he said are making good progress.

Fule said that the screening process is progressing well and that the first report on Chapter 32, which deals with financial control, has just been presented to EU member states. The screening reports on the rule of law, based on Chapters 23 and 24, will be presented in mid-May, while meetings relating to Chapter 18 of the total 35 chapters will begin or be completed by mid-June, he added.

Fule noted that the timing for opening the chapters is only partly in his hands, and that it ultimately depends on Serbia and the EU member states.

Technically, it depends on how well and how quickly Belgrade has prepared for opening individual chapters, Fule said.

"We are not here to set dates - my role is to ensure that the country is well prepared to join the EU," he explained.

The European commissioner said that the EU's efforts focus on Serbia achieving a level of preparedness "that will leave no room for doubts about its ability to take full responsibility as soon as it joins the EU."
