Serbian citizens were ranked fifth in 2011 when it comes to the number of asylum seekers in the EU countries, the European Commission (EC) said in a report. Around 14,000 Serbian citizens sought asylum in some EU member state in 2011, reads the report on migrations and asylum seekers, which was presented by EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmstrom on Friday. 14,000 Serbians sought asylum in EU in 2011 Twice as many asylum seekers came from Afghanistan and its citizens top the list of asylum seekers in the EU. Afghanistan is followed by Russia (18,200), Pakistan (15,700) and Iraq. In the report made by the Eurostat, there are around 20 million citizens from the so-called third world countries in the EU, or four percent of the total population. Despite the request of several EU member states to reintroduce border control inside the Schengen zone, the report shows that vast majority of EU citizens, 67 percent, would not accept such measure and 42 percent believe that the EU should make it easier for foreigners to come to the Union in order to improve declining demographic trends.
