Gendermerie Commander Gen. Bratislav Dikic stated on Thursday that the current situation in the ground safety zone (GSZ) was stable. The zone stretches along the administrative line between Kosovo and Metohija and central Serbia. Gendarmerie commander tours GSZ in south Dikic told journalists that at the moment there are no factors which could jeopardize peace in the area. During a tour of the Gendarmerie Command-Operation Center in Ristovac, eight kilometers north of Bujanovac, southern Serbia, Dikic presented the system of thermovision i.e. video surveillance over the ground security zone which is in the jurisdiction of the Gendarmerie. Reporters were able to see how video cameras and direct monitoring of the field can be used to control the situation and prevent the smuggling of excise goods, as well as illegal crossings over the administrative line. Dikic said that the Gendarmerie has good cooperation with citizens living in the ground security zone, the Serbian Armed Forces and members of KFOR on the other side of the administrative line. Dikic was accompanied today by Police Director Milorad Veljovic, who commended the Gendarmes deployed there "for their successful performance of exceptionally difficult tasks". He underscored that the Serbian police, including the Gendarmerie and other units, constitutes a stability factor both in Serbia and the wider region. After visiting the units in the villages of Muhovac and Car, Veljovic noted that more attention needs to be paid to people who are capable of performing their tasks under exceptionally difficult conditions. The 402 kilometers long administrative line with Kosovo is protected by around 900 police officers, including 500 members of the Gendarmerie. According to a report which unit commanders submitted to Veljovic and Dikic, around 10,500 illegal crossing attempts were recorded on the administrative line, and along the state border with Macedonia.
