The government has decided to curtail electricity supply to institutions and companies which are large consumers but not of vital importance for everyday life. The government’s measures are aimed at safeguarding the power system. Government curtails electricity supply Households and institutions, which provide vital services, such as heating plants, hospitals, waterworks, food production complexes and similar, will not be left short of electricity, the statement said. Local self-governments have been instructed to cut off decorative and commercial lighting. The government has reached this decision upon receiving a report by Serbia's national electric power company EPS which reads that in spite of all efforts the electricity situation in Serbia is very difficult due to sever weather conditions, the statement reads. Serbia's state electric power company EPS said that it would be able to continue to supply electricity without power cuts for the next seven to ten days if high consumption continued. Serbian President Boris Tadic has called on the citizens to rationally use the electric energy and proposed that the poorest families and households be exempted from payment of February power bills. Serbian public gas company Srbijagas Director Dusan Bajatovic has stated that if consumption continued at this rate Serbia would have enoughh gas for three weeks. B92 Tanjug
