Easter celebrations in Serbia began at midnight with liturgies held celebrating the resurrection of Christ, the most joyous holiday in the Christian world. Both Catholics and Orthodox Christians are celebrating the holiday on the same day this year. According to Christian beliefs, Jesus Christ was convicted on Thursday, crucified on Friday, and he resurrected on Sunday. Patriarch Irinej called for peace and brotherly love, sending a special greeting to Serbs in Kosovo. The Roman Catholic archbishop of the Archdiocese of Belgrade, Stanislav Hocevar, called on all Christians to be joyous despite the economic crisis and the fear of natural and other disasters, in honor of “Jesus’ victory over evil, sin, and death.” Patriarch Irinej
