Members of the European parliament have doubts over whether Bulgarian nominee for EU commissioner Rumiana Jeleva should take her position. The officials questioned Jeleva and stated that there was a series of irregularities, especially regarding her and her husband’s business interests, suggesting links with organized crime which could question her new position. Bulgarian candidate faces obstacle in EP During her parliamentary hearing yesterday, Jeleva several times rejected accusations that she had failed to report all the facts regarding her 2007 declaration of business interests, primarily about her position at the head of Bulgarian company Global Consult. “I have declared everything I was supposed to. Rumors and allegations against my husband or myself are completely unfounded. I have nothing to hide,” said the current Bulgarian foreign minister. Western media point out that all nominees for the EC positions must fill out a declaration and report their property, financial and business interests. President of the EC Jose Manuel Barroso stressed that anyone accusing others of wrongdoing should present corresponding and solid evidence.
