President Boris Tadic appeared in a Belgrade court today and accepted responsibility for breaking the law by drinking champagne after a football match. "I honestly did not know that the consumption of alcohol, even if it is just a toast, was forbidden and I completely take the responsibility for the misdemeanor,“ the president said in his statement before Judge Dusan Potezica. Beside the president, Sebrian police (MUP) brought charges against Minister of Youth and Sport Snezana Samardzic-Markovic, Belgrade City Assembly Speaker Aleksandar Antic and President of Serbian Football Association Tomislav Karadzic. They watched Serbia's national squad qualify directly to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in a game played in Belgrade on October 11, and then celebrated the success with a bottle of champagne. The pictures soon surfaced in the media, and police reacted by filing charges against them, considering that a law designed to prevent violence in sports forbids the consumption of alcohol at sport venues, and within a one-kilometer radius around them.
