280 financial probes have been initiated after the Forfeiture Law came into effect, Public Persecutor Slobodan Radosavljevic says. The recently adopted legislation regulates seizure of illegally gained assets. Criminals shaken, says prosecutor Radovanovic believes that the criminal circles have been "seriously shaken" by this. "It is certain that we will, step by step, reach the key names of the mafia," he told daily Vecernje Novosti. Radovanovic explained that there had been no actual seizure of anyone's illegal assets yet, but that this is "the easiest part". The problem, the prosecutor said, is to discover such property. "The biggest problem is that the courts do not go into making a deeper inventory of the property of those accused. There are cases where the accused arrives to trial in an expensive car, but had reported that they were on a minimum wage." Radovanovic believes that the country could collect a minimum of EUR 2bn by applying the law, and commended the state for its readiness to "fight crime with all its forces".
