Serbia's new legislation on forfeiture of assets gained through criminal activity takes effect this Sunday. The Justice Ministry officials say that first cases where property will be confiscate can be expected this month, while the Special Organized Crime Prosecution says the first to feel the consequences of the new law will be members of the Zemun Clan criminal gang, and persons accused of drug trafficking. Forfeiture law takes effect State Secretary with the Justice Ministry Slobodan Homen expects the law's implementation to be "extremely efficient", and adds that the state took "all the other necessary measures" to have it applied in practice. "MUP has formed a special unit for financial investigations, which numbers as many as 125 people, while the Justice Ministry has set up a directorate to manage the seized property, that will have 25 employees," he explained. Homen said that the units will be funded from the budget. "I think that the government has shown absolute readiness, now it is up to the prosecution and courts to allow for the adequate implementation of the law. I believe we will have first successful results in March and first examples of forfeitures, " said he. The law applies to those who committed criminal acts that constitute for organized crime activity, display of pornographic material and use of children in pornography, human trafficking, illegal production, possession and sale of narcotics, corruption, crimes against humanity and others protected by international law.
