Tomislav Nikolic says Boris Tadic's recent spate of statements in favor of stronger support for private businesses is frivolous and offensive to the citizens. Nikolic heads the opposition Serb Progressive Party (SNS), which polls as the country's most popular, followed by the ruling Democrats (DS), who have Tadic at the helm. Opposition leader scoffs at Tadic's campaign focus Campaigning has started for the May 6 parliamentary elections, but Tadic's visits to households and statements seem to have been made in his capacity as the Serbian president. Nonetheless, Nikolic said in a written statement carried by Tanjug that the results of the current government led by the Democratic Party (DS) were catastrophic for Serbia and its people. "Thanks to the DS, Serbia is now the regional leader when it comes to unemployment rates, inflation, lowest salaries and pensions, and the second in the world by the number of young people who left the country," he said. Nikolic also noted that a total of 264,493 people lost jobs in the past four years, and that 130,000 small and medium enterprises were closed, whereas only Albania and Bosnia-Herzegovina are worse than Serbia when it comes to the level of corruption. "Our industry has been destroyed and investors driven from the country by cumbersome bureaucracy," he said. Nikolic reiterated that, if it won the election, the SNS would endeavor to bring new investments, create jobs and eradicate systemic corruption. Tomislav Nikolic (Beta, file) Tanjug
