European Parliament (EP) Rapporteur Jelko Kacin says he is convinced that Romania will not “cause problems” regarding Serbia’s EU candidate status. “We have a wide consent of the six biggest political groups in the EP that will vote on the recommendation to grant Serbia the EU candidate status and I am in a way deeply convinced that Mr. (Romanian President Traian) Basescu will not vote against it, even if he wakes up on the wrong side of the bed,” he pointed out. EP rapporteur: Romania won’t block status decision Kacin said that Serbia had reached the agreement on regional cooperation with Pristina, that the implementation of the existing negotiations was in progress and that cooperation with EULEX and KFOR was successfully continued after the remaining barricades had been removed. “This progress represents a clear sign that Belgrade is ready to work hard on normalization of relations with Pristina. We have to acknowledge that and I hope that the Summit will confirm the decision on Serbia’s candidate status and together with the European Parliament extend a hand to Serbia,” the EP rapporteur pointed out. He urged all MEPs in the EP Foreign Affairs Committee to vote in favor of the resolution on Serbia on Thursday. “Serbia is finally entering the stage of the European integrations in which our mutual focus will be on establishing the rule of law and combat against systemic corruption,” Kacin explained. He noted that reforms had earlier been slow due to difficult and complicated relations with the Hague Tribunal and the “Kosovo blocking policy”. “Serbia can and should be more ambitious,” Kacin added, pointing out that the beginning of the accession talks needed to be ensured as soon as possible. “Today is a beginning of Serbia’s long journey which is in the interest of both Serbian and EU citizens,” he concluded.
