European Parliament Rapporteur Jelko Kacin said on Monday that along with EU candidate status, Serbia should also get a date for the beginning of negotiations. He pointed out, however, that in order to make progress in the Euro-integration process, the country needed to resolve the issue of Kosovo. EP rapporteur: Kosovo issue needs to be solved first According to him, during her recent visit to Serbia, German Chancellor Angela Merkel did not put new conditions before Serbia, but only explained the existing ones. He commended the efforts of Serbian officials in seeking a lasting solution to the Kosovo issue through dialogue, and underlined that Belgrade had to explain to the Serb community in Kosovo that no one wanted them to leave Kosovo. “KFOR and EULEX are there to introduce the rule of law and they will not give up on that,” Kacin said at the 11th Economic Summit of the Republic of Serbia, and added that the Belgrade-Pristina agreement on customs stamps had to be implemented, and not remain just words on a piece of paper. “This would harm the people themselves the most,” he added. “Walking out of the dialogue brings harm to the Serb community in Kosovo and that is a wrong move now that Serbia's candidate status is so close at hand,” the EP rapporteur stressed. Kacin added that the Serbian government needed to make it possible for Kosovo to attend regional forums and conferences. Commenting on Serbia's progress on the EU pathway, he said that the country had done a lot over the past three years, but underlined that a huge economic crisis had hit both Serbia and other countries in the region, which decreased the number of people who support the Euro-integration process. He pointed out that Serbia should be decisive in fighting corruption, exercising human rights, and in carrying out a just restitution process. Kacin said once again he regretted the calling off of gay Pride Parade in Serbia, and added that such a decision violated the human rights. Jelko Kacin (Tanjug, file)
